Job Summary Reporting to the Associate Director- Architectural Trades & Auto Services, the Automotive/Equipment Mechanic is assigned to the Auto Shop within the Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations and works independently or as a team member under the general supervision of the Auto Shop Supervisor. The Automotive/Equipment Mechanic performs the full range of skilled journey-level automotive/heavy equipment mechanical work in the overhaul, repair, maintenance, service and adjustment of automotive, heavy maintenance, heavy construction, and other specialty equipment and engines. Incumbents typically inspect, perform diagnostic tests, determine necessary corrective action, and make minor-to-major repairs to automobiles and similar vehicles and/or maintenance and construction equipment including performance of smog and other regulatory or manufacturer recommended tests. The incumbent uses a computerized maintenance systems to ensure the preventive maintenance program objectives are met and conducts vehicle inspections and maintains records; and may serve as a campus vehicle inspector. Key Responsibilities Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with manufacturer’s recommendations, standard trade practices, and applicable codes and regulations Prepare standard reports Provide instruction and lead direction to semi-skilled and unskilled assistants Records work efforts in detail within computerized recordkeeping systems and, where directed, on log sheets, and keeps accurate records so as to ensure an appropriate level of documentation regarding actions taken to complete assignments Use computerized maintenance management programs to complete work assignments including documentation of efforts but also as necessary to research and understand issues at hand Estimates cost, time and materials of maintenance and repair work Responds to emergency calls and urgent needs in order to prevent catastrophic equipment failure, injury, damage or further incident, takes appropriate action to mitigate damages and facilitate appropriate repair Disables and clearly identifies (lock out and tag out) unsafe equipment, and immediately notify appropriate personnel Uses computer for communicating, researching parts and specifications, coordinating, documenting work details, and recording time log Read, interpret and work from manufacturer diagrams, drawings, guides and schedules where needed to facilitate work efforts Maintain inventory and records, order parts and supplies Train and provide work direction to skilled and semi-skilled workers Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Thorough knowledge of automotive and/or equipment mechanics including electrical systems and brake and engine overhaul Thorough knowledge of methods, tools, materials, equipment and computerized systems used in the maintenance, adjustment and repair of engines, equipment and accessories Working knowledge of wiring and electrical theory and engine principles Working knowledge of hydraulic systems Working knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations pertaining to automotive and other power-driven equipment, including applicable smog regulations Must be able to make skilled repairs to applicable automotive, maintenance and/or construction equipment Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions Perform a variety of skilled repairs on equipment Perform required welding Inspect vehicles and equipment and determine extent of repairs Ability to operate all applicable tools and equipment necessary to perform skilled trade work Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and computerized record-keeping systems, and to prepare standard reports Ability to operate a motor vehicle, utility cart, scissor lift, boom lift, forklift, and other equipment (as certified) to successfully complete assignments Ability to accommodate a work schedule that varies according to operational needs and may include evening and weekend hours as well as to respond to callback which occur outside of the normal work schedule Required Qualifications Abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience as an automotive and/or equipment mechanic which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard apprenticeship program Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations License A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations. Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses. Preferred Qualifications Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program in the automotive and/or mechanical trades Five years of journey level work experience in the automotive and/or equipment mechanic trades Compensation Classification: Auto/Equipment Mechanic Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,355/month - $6,658/month CSU Salary Range: $5,355/month - $7,801/month San José State University offers employees a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30-35% of your base salary.
